MARK Loram, one of speedway’s most popular ever riders, says King’s Lynn owner Keith Chapman doesn’t get the credit he deserves for rescuing the club almost 30 years ago.
Loram, who spent five seasons in Lynn colours in the early stages of his career, has revealed how Chapman effectively salvaged the sport in the town.
The 2000 world champion insists Chapman should be regarded as a hero by Lynn fans.
“After my first season, things weren’t paying for Bill Barker and he sold up to Keith Chapman,” he said.
“Keith took on a hell of a lot when you look back and for him to still be there 30 years on proves it was a more than wise gamble that he took.
“He not only paid off all the debts and saved the club at a time where there was plenty of concern over the future, but he also gave all of the riders everything back as well.
“We were hugely grateful at the time and some had given up hope but there are a lot of people who will always have a lot to thank Keith for.
“The club has got a great history backed by some brilliant sponsors and supporters and I think that will always be the case at King’s Lynn.
“I learnt such a lot at such a relatively early stage of my career and it definitely stood my in good stead for the next 10/15 years or so.”
Chapman and co-promoter Dale Allitt are continuing to wait for a further update on whether the Minors and Brady Stars can start their season in August.
Boss Peter Schroeck is in regular contact with the riders and the club have confirmed they will only go ahead when it is safe and legal to do so.
The Adrian Flux FIM British Grand Prix has been cancelled next month but the 2021 date has already been rubber stamped for July 17.
