SHEFFIELD 58 STARS 31

Thursday July 18, 2024
KING’S LYNN’S dreadful luck continued as Benjamin Basso crashed out of their heavy 58-31 defeat at Sheffield.

The PSH Environmental Stars were trailing just 7-5 after a couple of races with Rising Star Anders Rowe producing a fine passing manoeuvre to win Heat Two.

But a first bend incident in Heat Three made a tough task even tougher.

Things got tight between Jan Kvech and former Star Josh Pickering heading into the first turn and the domino effect sent Basso hurtling under the air fence as he tried to make his move around the outside from gate four.

Initially complaining of right shoulder and left thigh pain, the Dane was eventually signed out with concussion whilst further tests will determine the full damage of what now appears to be a collarbone issue.

Already operating rider replacement for Nicolai Klindt, the Stars were reduced to just five riders with injury rider replacement coming into play for Basso.

Sheffield raced to a 5-1 in the fourth before Niels-Kristian Iversen led a 4-2 alongside guest Justin Sedgmen in what would be the side’s only heat advantage of the contest.

The hosts hit home another 5-1 in Heat Six before the Stars handed the champions a 5-0 when both Kvech and Patryk Wojdylo failed to complete Heat Seven with bike problems.

Iversen and Rowe took the minor placings in Heat Eight before Kvech recovered to win Heat Nine.

The Czech would pull up in Heat Ten after a forceful move from home guest Tom Brennan but he would again recover, first taking second place in Heat 12 before a tremendous effort saw him blast it around the outside to pass Sheffield skipper Kyle Howarth on the run to the line in Heat 14.

It proved to be a busy night for the remaining Stars with both Kvech and Iversen taking seven rides apiece.

And the stand in skipper admits it wasn’t an easy night to be a part of.

“It was difficult,” Iversen said.

“Obviously we lost Ben and we’re already short of riders so it didn’t make it any easier.

“I felt like I was doing every second race almost so it was demanding for the boys.

“If you’re down to five riders, you need everyone to score pretty well to be able to do anything but we had our struggles today.

“A few boys were lacking a little bit but everybody tried their best, they did what they could and this is a difficult place to visit.

“We just have to forget about this meeting, try and move on and come back stronger at home.”

The PSH Environmental Stars host rivals Ipswich at the Adrian Flux Arena next Thursday (July 25, 7.30pm).
