KING’S Lynn skipper Chris Harris is through to the Grand Prix Challenge – meaning he could be set for a sensational return to the full series next year.
Harris, who was last a GP regular back in 2016, negotiated Saturday’s Qualifier in mixed conditions at Glasgow, with the meeting coming down to a nervous conclusion.
Whilst former Stars racer Kai Huckenbeck was a clear winner of the meeting with a 15-point maximum, the battle for the remaining four places was intense.
Another ex-Star Anders Rowe was the surprise package of the meeting and he went through in third place after a run-off with Jack Holder, after both scored 12.
Three riders totalled 11 points with only two places available, and after a tense run-off involving yet more Lynn connections, it was Frederik Jakobsen and Harris who went through, with Maciej Janowski missing out.
It means the top five, including Harris, progress to the GP Challenge at Terenzano in Italy on July 25, a meeting which will also feature Robert Lambert after his win at Zarnovica on Saturday.
Harris said: “I’m obviously over the moon. I made hard work of it in the end.
“I started really well and lost points towards the end of the meeting. But it’s a nice feeling to get the last spot in the run-off.
“I was fuming when I came in from my last ride because I needed a second and after that it was a run-off.
“Gating was vital and towards the end I had the wrong gates and the wrong times. All-in-all we managed to get over the line in the end.
“I’ve got a huge SGP Challenge now in Terenzano to try and get back in the series. The dream is still on. Five starts and we could be there!”
